General from DTC meeting 2 September 2017
Stewards today concluded the adjourned matter regarding a report into the post race veterinary treatment administered to WILD BRITT following that mare competing in Race 1 on the programme. It was established on the evidence presented by trainer G Clarke and veterinarian Dr S Samuelson that the mare had returned from the race with an injury to the near fore leg and after an examination Dr Samuelson had recommended an anti inflammatory injection. When the injection was to be given the mare became quite cantankerous in the race day stalls and Mr Clarke offered to administer the treatment. He stated that the offer was made in the interest of safety and that he had an understanding of the mare’s temperament. Whilst the injection was ultimately performed by Mr Clarke it was authorised by Dr Samuelson and administered in her presence. This version of the stated events was verified by the independent witness who reported the matter.
Whilst the Stewards were of the opinion that Dr Samuelson had erred in not performing the procedure herself, it was acknowledged that she was only filling in for the regular race day veterinarian and she accepted responsibility for her role in the incident. Trainer G Clarke was reminded of his obligation under the rules pertaining to the treatment of horses whilst on course.
