General: As jockey C Spry was indisposed through illness, the following replacements were approved: Race 3 – MAVERICKS (B Davis), Race 4 – PHOENIX ARIZONA (P Shiers), Race 5 – EL TORANADO (P Shiers), Race 6 – CANTEAR (W Davis), Race 7 – ABU DHABI (W Davis)

Race 1: Maiden Plate 1300m

IWAUNA (P Shiers) – Bounded and then bumped at the start.

OCEANS BETWEEN US (K Cross) – Raced wide throughout. Shifted outwards and bumped another runner on straightening.

PRECURSOR (R Oakford) – The starter reported that the bubble cheeker had become detached in the barriers prior to jumping and therefore the gelding raced without this gear. Taken outwards across heels to secure a clear run near the 250m.

QUE PASA (S Ridler) – Raced without cover in running.

TUSCARORA (V Arnott) – Lay outwards rounding the home turn.

BELLA GIULIETTA (F Bergstrand) – Slow into stride.

HARD WORK REWARDS (R Vigar) - Slow into stride.

LADY BARRON (W Kerford) – Raced wide throughout. Bumped and unbalanced on straightening.

PINCENTIA (J Todd) – Commenced awkwardly. Shifted the near fore plate in running.

TOUCH OF FLO (P Denton) – Bumped at the start.

Race 2: 0-58 Handicap 1200m

Stewards interviewed trainer N Dyer in regards to the riding instructions he intended to give each jockey as his stable had three runners in the event.

MERVEILLE (R Oakford) – Bumped at the start.

SENOR JUEZ (R Booth) – Raced wide for the majority of the event.

HIMALAYA FLYER (J Lyon) – A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore. As the gelding has now returned lame in this leg following consecutive race starts, trainer S Paynter advised that the gelding would undergo a full veterinary examination including x rays to determine the cause of this lameness and he would report the results accordingly. Trainer was notified he must present a veterinary clearance for the gelding and it must compete in a barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to being permitted to race again.

SHUUMATSU (W Davis) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped. Raced wide throughout.

MIGHTY ACTION (P Shiers) – Bounded at the start.

NAMING RIGHTS (W Kerford) – Slow into stride. Raced wide on straightening.

PONTY (F Bergstrand) – Knuckled at the start.

General: Following this race jockey R Booth received treatment by the paramedics for a medical condition and was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital.

The following riding replacements were approved:

ON YOUR WAY (V Arnott) – Following the unplaced performance a post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

LOTION (P Denton) – Commenced awkwardly.

RAKITIKI (R Booth) – Raced keenly in the early stages and wide throughout.

EMPRESS O'REILLY (Z Gibbs) – Raced wide throughout.

KIFAAH (R Oakford) – Slow into stride. Impeded for clear running in the early stages of the straight.

Race 4: 0-62 Handicap 1100m

KILIM (B Davis) – Commenced awkwardly.

KING KAZOU (R Oakford) – Raced wide throughout.

LEAD HUSSON (J Todd) – Crowded between runners at the start and restrained shortly after.

LITTLE JAY JAY (W Kerford) – Commenced awkwardly getting its head in the air. Raced wide in running. In regards to the unplaced performance trainer N Bruggemann was of the opinion that the gelding may not have appreciated the firm track surface and she intends to fit concussion plates for its next start.

NICCOROSSA (S Ridler) – Resented the kickback through the middle stages.

SECOND BASE (J Lyon) – Crowded shortly after the start.

Race 4: 0-62 Handicap 1100m

KILIM (B Davis) – Commenced awkwardly.

KING KAZOU (R Oakford) – Raced wide throughout.

LEAD HUSSON (J Todd) – Crowded between runners at the start and restrained shortly after.

LITTLE JAY JAY (W Kerford) – Commenced awkwardly getting its head in the air. Raced wide in running. Race 5: 0-76 Handicap 1000m

POET'S CHOICE (F Bergstrand) – Commenced awkwardly. Held tight leaving the 650m and was restrained by its rider.

INVITATIONS (R Vigar) – When questioned regarding the unplaced performance rider advised that whilst he was obliged to steady his mount outwards from heels near the 650m and therefore obliged to race wide from thereon, the gelding did not let down in the straight and failed to finish the race off as anticipated. Trainer M Hickmott expressed the opinion that the gelding failed to handle the track surface. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

KING DEJOUR (V Arnott) – Fractious in the barriers. Bounded at the start. Commenced to race keenly leaving the 900m and was consequently restrained near the 650m.

EL TORANADO (P Shiers)  - Lay outwards through the middle stages.

NORDIC ECLIPSE (S Ridler) – Raced wide throughout.

General – On inquiry jockey R Oakford (KISS THE CONDOR) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) with the specifics being that approaching the 650m he permitted his mount to shift inwards when insufficiently clear resulting in POET’S CHOICE

(F Bergstrand) being tightened for room and restrained. In considering an appropriate penalty Stewards took into account that jockey R Oakford has not been suspended for careless riding in over 30 years and therefore a reprimand was issued.

Race 6: 0-66 Handicap 1600m

CRACKAJACK (B Davis) – Bumped at the start.

ZOE'S GIFT (F Bergstrand) – Shifted in abruptly at the 750m.

CANTEAR (W Davis) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped. Rider reported that his mount raced ungenerously in running and compounded from the 600m. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the off hind. Trainer D Waters was advised that the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.

GOING NOWHERE (S Ridler) - Bumped at the start.

BACHELOR PAD (K Cross) - Bumped at the start.

Race 7: ROANT Gold Cup 1300m

PRETTY BLONDE (J Lyon) – Trainer in care P Cole reported that the mare had sustained an abrasion to the forehead en route to the course and after undergoing a veterinary examination was cleared to compete. Stewards questioned jockey J Lyon in relation to his handling of the mare in this event. The matter was adjourned to allow evidence to be taken from trainer K Healy as he was not in attendance at the race meeting. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

WHISTLE STOP (P Shiers) – Commenced awkwardly.

CADMAN (S Ridler) – Raced wide throughout.

LIBERTY HILL (W Kerford) – Had difficulty securing a clear run from on straightening until near the 100m.

ABU DHABI (W Davis) – Commenced awkwardly.

Summary

Post race samples were taken from all winners and ABU DHABI. Pre race samples were taken from HIMALAYA FLYER, WISEN UP, LEAD HUSSON, CRACKAJACK, ZOE’S GIFT, CANTEAR, STATUE OF WARRIORS, WHISTLE STOP, HARREBS TIME, ROYAL REQUEST, UNBREAKABLE & ABU DHABI.

All riders were subjected to breath analysis testing for the detection of alcohol.
