 All runners engaged in the Pioneer Sprint underwent veterinary examinations on Thursday 27 April, 2017 and were cleared to compete. On race morning Stewards inspected all runners engaged to compete and conducted stable compliance checks with no reportable issues or rule breaches detected.

At the request of SKY channel the following race times were amended:

Race 1 – 1.19pm  Race 7 – 5.12pm

Race 1: Peter Kittle Motor Company Handicap 1200 metres

As jockey/trainer C Spry had 2 runners in this event, Stewards interviewed him in relation to how he intended to ride TEQUILA RED and the riding instructions he intended to issue for EDIT.

LADWELL (S Altieri) refused to load into the barriers and declared a late scratching at 1.21pm by order of the Stewards. Stewards ordered that all bets placed on LADWELL were to be refunded and all successful wagers placed prior to 1.21pm were subject to the following deductions:

Trainer M Nyhan was advised that LADWELL must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.

Correct weight was delayed to allow jockey S Ridler, rider of the second placed STORMTROOPER to view the patrol film in the straight.

ASH GREY – (W Kerford) – Lay inwards under pressure in the straight.

CESTOS (Z Gibbs) – Lay outwards under pressure from the 250m.

HARMONIUM BELLS (P Denton) –Knuckled and blundered as the gates opened and dislodged its rider.

URBAN BOURBON (M Hart) – Bounded at the start and then veered outwards.

STORMTROOPER (S Ridler) – Knuckled at the start. Raced in restricted room passing the 1000m.

General: Jockey P Denton was examined by the Paramedics and was cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.

Race 2: Harvey Norman Handicap 1200 metres

ALPHA SON (B Huppatz) – Bumped at the start.

QUE PASA (M Tyndall) – Slow into stride and bumped at the start.

STRATUM’S WAY (S Ridler) - Fractious prior to the start and commenced awkwardly. Raced wide throughout. Raced greenly in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. When questioned regarding his mount’s galloping action in the straight rider advised in his opinion the gelding appeared to swing it’s near fore leg as a result of racing greenly. Trainer G Connor was shown the patrol vision in the home straight and undertook to experiment with a gear change in an attempt to rectify this racing manner. Stewards will continue to monitor the gelding’s galloping action at future starts.

RAZOR BURN (W Kerford) – Bumped at the start.

Race 3: Coleman Printing Cup 1000 metres

ALL THE CREDIT (B Davis) – Bumped at the start. Ridden vigorously in the early stages to maintain a forward position. Lay outwards through the middle stages and in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

SKY MUSTER (W Kerford) – Rolled inwards under pressure near the 250m.

EJAYTEE (F Bergstrand) – Lay outwards rounding the home turn.

GRANDE CASTAGNO (S Ridler) – Steadied outwards across heels to obtain clear running near the 250m.

WILD RUN (R Vigar) – Bumped at the start and steadied off heels shortly after. Raced wide rounding the home turn.

Race 4: Ladbrokes Maiden 1100 metres

Stewards interviewed trainers K Healy and L Lefoe in relation to the riding instructions both intended to issue bearing in mind they each had 3 runners in the event.

HEZA BLEV (M Tyndall) – Raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

OCEANS BETWEEN US (M Hart) – Raced greenly in running.

HALOGEM (W Kerford) – Slow into stride.

MA CHITA (B Huppatz) – Commenced awkwardly getting its head in the air. Bumped with another runner at the 200m.

TACTICAL LASS (C Spry) – Improved into restricted room and steadied from heels near the 700m.

PANZINI (S Altieri) – Shifted outwards and bumped another runner at the 200m.

Race 5: B & S Timber Handicap 1200 metres

HUSSARS (S Altieri) – Knuckled at the start.

KENTUCKY FIREBALL (P Denton) – Crowded at the start.

ICEFLOW (S Ridler) – Steadied from heels when over-racing through the middle stages.

MINE CRAFT (R Vigar) – Raced wide throughout. Trainer J Peacock reported that the gelding was examined by his veterinarian subsequent to the meeting and was humanely euthanized after being diagnosed with a fractured off knee.

Race 6: Holdfast Insurance Pioneer Sprint 1200 metres

Stewards interviewed trainer G Clarke in relation to the riding instructions he intended to issue bearing in mind he had 3 runners in the event.

KING’S PARDON (P Denton) – Tightened between runners at the start.

TICKET TO TOORAK (B Davis) – Raced wide from the 600m. When questioned regarding the unplaced performance rider advised that his mount was off the bit in the early stages and had a tendency to lay out rounding the first turn and failed to finish the race off as anticipated.

STATUE OF WARRIORS (F Bergstrand) – Bumped at the start. Steadied from heels near the 700m.

JAVA (S Altieri) – Commenced awkwardly. Crowded and bumped shortly after the start.

CAPTAIN PUNCH (C Spry) – Fractious prior to the start and was slow into stride. Raced wide throughout.

MOOT (M Hart) – Returned having bled from the off side nostril. Trainer L Lefoe was advised of the provisions of AR53A(7).

General: S Ridler (LE COMMANDANT) was fined $250 for a whip breach under AR137A(5)(a)(i)&(ii) in that he used his whip consecutively and on 3 additional occasions than permitted prior to the 100m. In consideration of penalty Stewards took into account that LE COMMANDANT won the race but also that jockey S Ridler has not previously breached the current whip rules.

Race 7 Lasseters Handicap 1600 metres

SWIMMER (B Huppatz) was declared a late scratching by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice at 4.20pm after the mare was injured in the race day stalls. No betting deductions were applicable.

SHINSKY (B Davis) – Steadied from heels passing the 1000m. Returned with blood in its mouth.

JIMMY ROYALE (R Vigar) – Raced wide in the early stages.

PARTY SET (P Denton) – Bounded at the start and lost ground.

COME FOLLOW ME (S Altieri) – Steadied from heels when over racing into the first turn. Returned having bled from the off side nostril. Trainer T Halter was advised of the provisions of AR53A(7).

ARROGANT (F Bergstrand) – Steadied off heels shortly after the start.

Pre-race samples were taken from ASH GRAY, QUE PASA, RED VALAZEEL, SKY MUSTER, HEZA BLEV, MA CHITA, HUSSARS, JIMMY ROYALE, ARROGANT and all runners in race 6. Post race samples were taken from all winners and SUPER BRYAN.

All riders were breath-tested for alcohol.

Race 2 – Jockey B Huppatz was reprimanded for a whip breach AR137A(5)(a)(i)&(ii)


Race 5 – Trainer G Connor fined $100 for presenting ICEFLOW without its approved gear.

Race 6 – Jockey S Ridler fined $250 for a whip breach AR137A(5)(a)(i)&(ii)
