Race 1: Maiden 1300m DV1
LATEST BENTLEY (J Todd) – Had a tendency to lay inwards under pressure in the straight.
LIGHTNING HUSSLER (J Lyon) - Raced greenly in running.
VARDY (K Cross) – Slow into stride.
BIG BLOWS (J Maskiell) – Raced ungenerously passing the 900m due to the kickback.
TIME RULER (B Sweeney) – Raced wide throughout. Returned from the race having bled from both nostrils. Trainer J Peacock was advised of the provisions of AR53.
ASHSTAR (K Gladwin) – Rider reported that his saddle shifted at the start and continued to move during the event and subsequently placed him at a disadvantage in fully testing his mount in the straight.
Race 2: Maiden 1300m DV2
BARTENDER MAN (R Oakford) – When questioned regarding the unplaced performance rider advised that his mount was under pressure at the 600m and failed to finish the race of as anticipated. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
CAN LA (P Denton) – Commenced awkwardly.
POWERSTRETCHER (B Huppatz) – Commenced awkwardly.
TRYSTOFF (P Shiers) – Raced wide throughout.
REMODIFY (B Sweeney) - Raced wide throughout.
Race 3: 0-58 1200m
HARLEQUIN BELLS (W Davis) – Blundered at the start and then crowded. Hung out significantly from the 700m and caused interference to other runners. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a trauma injury to the left eye. Trainer S Clarke was advised that he must present a veterinary clearance and the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.
BON AIRE (C Spry) – Commenced awkwardly.
JAYEFFKAY (J Maskiell) – Returned with an elevated heart rate and required veterinary treatment. The veterinarian advised the gelded recovered within normal parameters.
BENTLEY TYCOON (J Todd) – Carried outwards approaching the 650m.
MIGHTY TAX (B Sweeney) – Commenced awkwardly unbalancing its rider. Raced ungenerously through the middle stages when resenting the kickback.
ALPHA CHEW CHEW (K Cross) – Raced wide from the 700m.
COCCO LUCIA (R Vigar) – Tightened for room and checked at the 650m. Cast the near fore plate in running.
QUE PASA (P Denton) - Raced wide throughout.
General – HARLEQUIN BELLS (W Davis) hung outwards racing into the first turn and despite the efforts of its rider shifted ground resulting in BENTLEY TYCOON (J Todd) being carried out and COCCO LUCIA being tightened for room and checked near the 650m. HARLEQUIN BELLS will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.
Race 4: 0-66 1200m
REX CELERITATE (R Oakford) – Slow into stride.
BAKSLAP (J Maskiell) – Raced wide throughout.
CULZEAN (K Gladwin) - Slow into stride.
ANABELLA (F Bergstrand) – When questioned regarding the unplaced performance rider advised that her mount did not appreciate the kickback through the middle stages and yielded ground from the 650m. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer B Richard advised that the mare would now be spelled.
FRENCH TUSSON (R Vigar) – Unable to secure clear running between the 500m and the 300m.
Race 5: 0-62 1100m
CLEESE (J Lyon) – When questioned regarding his handling of the gelding in this event rider advised that he had ridden vigorously from the gates to race prominently as instructed but after being crossed by another runner near the 950m his mount commenced to resent the kickback and as a result lost momentum. He advised that he elected to shift wider on the track approaching the first turn to get out of the kickback and his mount had a tendency to lay outwards through the middle stages when racing at the rear of the field. He added that his mount responded to his urgings rounding the home turn and picked up the bit when racing on the outside of the field and finished off strongly in the run to the finish. This explanation was noted.
ON YOUR WAY (V Arnott) – Crowded and impeded near the 250m.
HOWDEE (B Huppatz) – Bumped at the start.
HOT DEMAND (R Vigar) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped.
MISS MOSH (J Todd) – Slow into stride.
SANDHILL EXPRESS (S Ridler) – Shifted in quickly near the 250m and impeded another runner. Rider was cautioned and advised to exercise more care in future when shifting ground. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near hind. Trainer S Clarke was advised that he must present a veterinary clearance for the gelding prior to racing again.
Race 6: 0-76 1000m
AFRICAN PULSE (R Vigar) – Raced wide throughout.PATRONIZING (S Tsaikos) – Commenced awkwardly
Race 7: 0-70 1600m
MALMAS (J Lyon) – When questioned regarding the unplaced performance rider advised that whilst his mount did not appreciate the kickback he expressed disappointment that the gelding did not make ground in the straight. A post race examination revealed the gelding had returned with an elevated heart rate and required veterinary treatment. The veterinarian advised the gelding recovered within normal parameters.
CRACKAJACK (S Ridler) – Rider fumbled and dropped his whip near the 100m.
MURPHY (v Arnott) – Raced wide throughout.
WICKED RHYTHM (F Bergstrand) – Change of instruction notified for the gelding to be ridden forward if possible. Raced on pace.
Race 8: OPEN 1300m
Stewards interviewed trainer G Clarke in relation to the riding instructions he intended to issue as his stable had multiple runners in this event.
ROYAL REQUEST (J Todd) – Slow into stride. Angled outwards across heels to secure a clear run at the 150m.
LE COMMANDANT (P Shiers) – Commenced awkwardly.
LAKE JACKSON (C Spry) - Slow into stride.
FOLK TALES (J Lyon) – Taken inwards across heels near the 125m to secure a clear run.
PRETTY BLONDE (B Sweeney) – Failed to muster early speed.
HARMONIUM BELLS (K Gladwin) – Raced wide throughout.
SPARTAN EAGLE (K Cross) – Raced wide from the 700m.
Swab samples were taken from all winners and LE COMMANDANT. Pre race samples were taken from BORLUNG, MULLIGAN FALLS, MOUSSAMBANI, EL GENERAL, JAYEFKAY, BAKSLAP, TROOPER’S PLOY, ALSOADAMAS, THE CAPTAIN, OUR BARTY, ZAHSPEED & HARREBS TIME.
Race 3 – Jockey J Maskiell fined $200 for a whip breach AR137A(5)(a)(ii)
Trainer D Leech fined $500 ($300 suspended for 12 months) for improper conduct

On Monday 2 July, 2018 TRNT Stewards inquired into complaints received from DTC staff relating to an incident on race day involving licensed trainer D Leech. Subsequently D Leech pleaded guilty to a breach of AR175(q) with the specifics being that during the race meeting on 30 June, 2018 his conduct towards Darwin Turf Club bar staff was in the opinion of the Stewards improper. Mr Leech was fined the sum of $500 with Stewards ruling that $300 of this fine be suspended for 12 months provided that during that period he is not found guilty of any other conduct related issues.
