General – from Darwin Turf Club 19 November, 2016

Race 1 – Benchmark 73 Handicap 1300m

Trainer D Leech reported that WHISTLE STOP had received treatment after returning with bruised front heels.

Race 4 – Benchmark 54 Handicap 1100m

Stewards have now concluded the inquiry into the poor performance of SCARLET ICE. Jockey F Bergstrand advised on the day that her mount felt “scratchy” in its action enroute to the barriers but not to an extent that she felt warranted reporting it to the Veterinarian. Following the event she reported that her mount felt amiss mid race and she commenced to ease the mare down. A post race veterinary examination revealed SCARLET ACE to be lame in both front legs and the near hind leg.

When questioned trainer S Clarke advised that the mare had been receiving ongoing treatment under veterinary supervision for multiple conditions. This evidence was supported by his treatment records which were requested by the Stewards as part of this inquiry. Mr Clarke further stated that the mare had worked well during the week leading up to the race meeting and he had no concerns with its condition or suitability to race.

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by Mr Clarke and he further advised that after consultation with the owner SCARLET ICE will now be retired.
