General - Stewards today conducted compliance checks and stable inspections which included examinations of all runners engaged to compete at today’s meeting.

Race 1: 0-66 Handicap 1200m

DUGAN (NZ) (S Brown) – Stewards questioned apprentice S Brown in relation to his tactics in continuing to apply pressure and race on terms with the leader through the middle stages, when in the opinion of the Stewards there appeared to be an opportunity to steady his mount and race at the leaders girth. He advised he had no specific instructions other than to position the gelding wherever it was comfortable in running. He explained the he allowed his mount to stride forward and obtained a position outside the leader and as the gelding was striding freely without being urged along he elected not to steady and continued to race on terms with the leader. In the circumstances this explanation was accepted.

SHOOT 'N' SCOOT (R Vigar) - Commenced awkwardly and veered outwards and raced wide throughout.  Tightened for room and restrained inwards to avoid heels over the concluding stages.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENT (R Oakford) - The Club veterinarian reported that the gelding returned with a laceration to the abdomen.

SOLDIER'S SECRET (P Shiers) – Shifted inwards and away from another runner near the 1000m.  Bumped with another runner then became unbalanced on straightening when under pressure and yielded ground in the straight.  A post-race vet examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

NORTHERN STORM (C Spry) - Commenced awkwardly. Got its head in the air when negotiating the first turn consequently lost ground.  The Club veterinarian reported that the gelding returned with a laceration to the off hind hock.

ZOCALOS (S Ridler) - Bumped at the start.  Contacted on the hind quarters by another runner and became unbalanced near the 1100m and again bumped and unbalanced near the 1000m.

HOT SPIN (K Gladwin) - Bumped and crowded between runners at the start.  Crowded and bumped near the 1100m and again crowded near the 1000m.

ARRAYANES (K Cross) - Commenced awkwardly and bumped with another runner.  Lay inwards shortly after the start and contacted another runner near the 1100m.  Carried inwards and impeded near the 1000m.

PERESSINI (P Denton) - Bumped with another runner and became unbalanced when rounding the home turn.

General: On inquiry it was established that near the 1000m SOLDIER’S SECRET (P Shiers) despite the efforts of its rider, shifted in and away from DUGAN (S Brown) resulting in interference to ARRAYANES (K Cross), HOTSPIN (K Gladwin) and ZOCALOS (S Ridler).

At a further inquiry apprentice S Brown (DUGAN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that whilst riding his mount along, he did permit the gelding to shift outwards inside the final 100m resulting in SHOOT ‘N’ SCOOT (R Vigar) having to restrain inwards to avoid heels over the concluding stages.  Apprentice S Brown had his permit to ride in races suspended for a period of 1 NT meeting to commence midnight Wednesday 13th July 2016 and to expire midnight Saturday 16th July 2016.

Race 3 - 0-62 Handicap 1300m

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards viewed the head on patrol footage of the start in the presence of jockey C Spry, the rider of FARAJA, and in addition took evidence from the Starter Mr J O’Neil.  Stewards were satisfied that when the start was effected, the geldings’ bridle was being held by a barrier attendant when attempting to assist the rider and as a consequence the gelding was unable to commence with the field and lost considerable ground.  Acting under the provision of AR134A, Stewards were of the opinion that FARAJA had been denied a fair start and was therefore declared to be a non-starter with the following deductions applicable to successful bets placed on the event.

SENOR JUEZ          5c win     5c place

General: On inquiry jockey B Huppatz (ROYAL CHOICE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under 137(a) in that near the 1250m he permitted his mount to shift inwards when insufficiently clear resulting in MIRKA (P Denton) having to steady inwards onto QUANTUM DOT (R Oakford) which was in turn bumped inwards onto OLD STORMY (S Brown) which had to be checked by its rider.  Jockey B Huppatz’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 2 NT meetings to commence midnight Wednesday 13th July 2016 and to expire midnight Sunday 14th July 2016.
