Industry Notice – trainer Garry Lefoe

Trainer Garry Lefoe had earlier this year commenced proceedings in the NT Supreme Court seeking a judicial review of the decisions of the NT Racing Appeals Tribunal and the TRNT Stewards to disqualify him for multiple breaches of the Australian Rules of Racing in 2024.

As part of these proceedings, an application for a stay of the penalties was sought by Mr Lefoe. On 15 April 2025 the NT Supreme Court, despite opposition from TRNT, handed down a decision to grant Mr Lefoe a stay of proceedings against the terms of disqualification pending the completion of the judicial review.

In adhering to the Supreme Court decision, TRNT renewed Garry Lefoe trainer’s license on 30 April 2025 for the 2025/26 racing season.

TRNT became aware today that Garry Lefoe has been charged by the NT Police with the commission of multiple indictable offences following his recent arrest.

After considering the serious nature of these charges and the fact that Mr Lefoe remains on remand, the TRNT Stewards acting under the provisions of AR 23 have suspended his license forthwith pending the hearing and determination of these charges.

AR23: Without limiting any other rules or Stewards’ powers, if a person has been charged with a breach of the Rules or with the commission of an indictable criminal offence, and if the Stewards are of the opinion that the continued participation of that person in racing might pose an unacceptable risk of prejudicing the image, interests, integrity or welfare of racing, the Stewards may pending the hearing and determination of the charge:

  • suspend any licence, registration, right or privilege, granted to that person under these Australian Rules;

Mr Lefoe has been informed of the TRNT Stewards decision and has been afforded the opportunity to respond.
