New Chairman of Stewards appointed to Thoroughbred Racing NT Michael Zarb will replace long-serving Chairman of Stewards, David Hensler, as head of Northern Territory thoroughbred racing’s integrity unit at the end of August.

Hensler, who took over from Lindsay Lane early in 2014, is returning to Perth, Western Australia, where he was based prior to his move to the Territory, to take up a senior position with Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA).

Like Hensler, Zarb will bring a wealth of stewarding experience to the Territory.

A former jockey, he began his career as a cadet steward in New South Wales under renowned steward John Shreck in 1989, and held several senior stewarding roles in the state before taking up a position in Singapore as a Steward and Co-Ordinator of the Singapore Training Academy of Racing in 2005.

From 2008-2012, he worked in Macau with roles such as Chief Stipendiary Steward and Head of Racing, before a stint in New Zealand with the NZ Racing Integrity Unit.

He returned to Australia in 2014 and was Chief Stipendiary Steward in the Central and Western Districts with Harness Racing NSW, before another overseas posting, this time to Seoul, Korea, as Senior Stipendiary Steward and Racing Advisor to the Korean Racing Authority.

Most recently, from late 2020, he has been a Senior Stipendiary Steward with Racing South Australia, based in Adelaide.

Zarb is very excited about his move to the Territory and the task ahead as TRNT’s Chairman of Stewards.

“I would like to sincerely thank Nicolle Rantanen Reynolds and her Board for the confidence they have placed in me and for the opportunity to join TRNT.

“My wife and I are looking forward to making the NT our home. I am committed to working collaboratively with TRNT staff and industry participants to develop clear policies and procedures which are transparent and enhance the integrity and support the growth and long-term success of the thoroughbred industry across the NT.”
