All runners engaged in the Palmerston Sprint and Darwin Cup underwent a veterinary inspection on Thursday 30 July and Friday 31 July, 2020 and also subjected to out of competition testing. Runners in these races were required to be on course 2 hours prior to the advertised start time of each respective race.

General - All jockeys were subjected to alcohol breath testing upon arrival on course.

 

Race 1: Maiden 1100m

Stewards interviewed trainer D Leech in relation to his riding instructions as his stable had multiple runners in this event.

LIT (P Hall) arrived at the start prior to the rest of the field to be loaded into the barriers in accordance with the usual method approved by the Stewards. The mare shifted the off hind plate in the preliminary and due to the delay in refitting this plate, the remainder of the field arrived at the start and the mare became unsettled and could not be loaded in a timely manner. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of LIT at 10.34am. All monies wagered on LIT was ordered to be refunded and the following deductions were applicable to all successful bets placed prior to 10.34am.

This resulted in the race starting approximately 5 minutes late.

WICKED ALIBI (C Hunter) – Raced greenly into the first turn when resenting the kickback losing momentum through the middle stages.

I DREAM OF JENA (P Denton) – Bumped at the start.

SHILLERTIN (T Treichel) – Slow into stride and then tightened for room.

TREDICI (J Todd) - Bumped at the start. Impeded and taken outwards from heels at the 150m.

KICKIN GOALS (A Lindsay) – Raced wide throughout.

Race 2: 0-66 1100m

Stewards interviewed trainer G Clarke in relation to his riding instructions as his stable had multiple runners in this event.

PATRIOT DAY (K Gladwin) – Bumped at the start.

TORNADO OF SOULS (P Shiers) - Bumped at the start.

HATTAN MAN (R Vigar) – Raced wide from the 650m

MANDATER (S Fawke) – Slow into stride. Lay inwards when tested with the whip in the straight.

SILVER MELODY (T Treichel) – Inclined to lay outwards rounding the home turn.

EXTOLMENT (P Denton) – Slow into stride. Raced wide in the early stages. Returned with a laceration to the off fore leg.

Race 3: 0-62 1000m

EOKALIO (A Lindsay) – Raced wide throughout.

HUSSLIN HUMPH (P Gatt) – Bumped at the start. Lay inwards under presuure over the final 100m.

FLASH OF THUNDER (P Hall) – Bumped at the start.

FRILLY DESIGN (J Todd) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped. When questioned regarding the unplaced performance rider advised that the mare resented the kickback racing into the first turn, raced ungenerously and yielded ground from thereon. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare had an elevated heart rate.

VON ROSEN (P Shiers) – Returned with a laceration to the near hind leg.

GOOD TO BE GREAT (W Davis) - Raced wide throughout.

Race 4: 0-58 1600M

Stewards interviewed trainer D Leech in relation to his riding instructions as his stable had multiple runners in this event.

CALL ME LEGEND (A Nicholls) – Bumped at the start. Raced wide from the 600m. Returned with a laceration to the near hind leg.

ESCALATOR (R Fradd) – Stood flat footed at the start and lost ground.

HAPPY BIBI (P Hall) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped. Rider advised that his mount did not feel comfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have an elevated heart rate.

THE AUDITOR (K Gladwin) – Raced wide throughout.

IN MODERATION (S Fawke) – Bumped at the start.

1ST FORT KNOX 2ND CALL ME LEGEND 3RD LADY SATAB

 

Race 5: BMNT 1600m

JAVA (J Todd) – Rider reported that his mount felt amiss in its action and he therefore stopped riding along from the 600m. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding was lame in the near fore. Trainer G Clarke will be required to present a veterinary clearance for the gelding prior to racing again.

PINZU (B Huppatz) – The gelding underwent a veterinary examination behind the barriers at the request of the rider and was cleared to compete. Returned with a laceration to the near hind.

BOXACHOCOLATES (R Fradd) – Steadied from heels when laying outwards rounding the first turn. Raced without cover and wide through the early and middle stages.

BULL MARKET (P Gatt) – Lay inwards throughout running. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

ZAP (S Fawke) – Commenced awkwardly.

I AM IMPINGE (A Lindsay) – Slow into stride.

Race 6: 0-62 1300m

SHANGHAI SHAKER (B Huppatz) was involved in a mishap it the race day stalls and after undergoing a veterinary examination was withdrawn by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice at 12.27pm.

ISLE OF LIGHT (P Gatt) – Rider reported his mount resented the kickback and as a result raced below expectations.

MEAZZA (A Nicholls) – Slow into stride.

CHOICE APPROACH (A Jordsjo) – The gelding underwent a veterinary examination behind the barriers at the request of the rider and was cleared to compete.

ART OF MORE (A Lindsay) – Returned with a laceration to the off hind fetlock.

Race 7: BMNT 1300m

DAWN RAID (A Nichols) – Slow into stride.

PASSETO (J Todd) – When questioned regarding the unplaced performance rider advised that in his opinion his mount did not stretch out in running and may not have appreciated the firm track. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

WARFACE (W Davis) – Raced wide throughout.

1ST SPIELBERG 2ND MR BOOMJANGLES 3RD DAWN RAID

 

Race 8: 0-58 1200m

EL SICARIO (W Davis) – Commenced awkwardly. Raced wide throughout.

LIBERTYS TORCH (P Denton) – Raced wide throughout.

TOORAK ROAD (B Huppatz) – Bumped at the1000m.

YULARA DRIVE (P Hall) – Commenced awkwardly. Returned having bled from the off side nostril. Trainer S Arnold was advised of the provisions of AR79(7).

VIETTI (A Lindsay) – Slow into stride. Shifted in and away from another runner and bumped at the 1000m.

MANHATTAN SPIRIT (T Treichel) – Bumped at the start.

Race 9: 0-70 1200m

Stewards interviewed trainer G Clarke in relation to his riding instructions as his stable had multiple runners in this event.

ANOTHER BIT (K Gladwin) – Tightened for room and restrained at the 600m.

JOHNNY WHITESOX (R Fradd) – Bumped at the start.

TREBLA (A Nichols) – Bumped at the start. Raced wide throughout.

VUNIVALU (W Davis) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped.

General – On inquiry jockey T Treichel pleaded guilty to a charge under AR131(a) for engaging in careless riding. The specifics being that as the rider of THE TROOPER he permitted his mount to shift inwards near the 600m when insufficiently clear resulting in ANOTHER BIT (K Gladwin) being tightened for room and restrained by its rider. T Teichel had his licence to ride in races suspended for 1 NT meeting (ASTC 8/8/2020) and was additionally fined the sum of $300.

Race 10: bet365 Palmerston Sprint 1200m

Stewards interviewed trainer G Clarke in relation to his riding instructions as his stable had multiple runners in this event.

THE CAPTAIN (K Gladwin) – Knuckled at the start unbalancing the rider.

SMUGGLING (W Davis) – Slow into stride.

HIGH COST (T Treichel) – Momentarily unbalanced after contacting the running rail near the 650m.

EASTWOOD (R Vigar) – Raced wide throughout.

CLEVER TOMMY (A Kordsjo) - Raced wide throughout.

ENIGMAN (P Shiers) – Held up approaching the 400m and again near the 200m when taken outwards to secure a clear run.

GOLDEN DICE (S Fawke) – Ridden vigorously from the barriers and attempted to buck shortly after the start. Rider reported his mount resented the kickback in running.

I’M TOO HOT (P Gatt) – Slow into stride. After compounding in the straight a post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be in a distressed condition with an elevated heart rate and coughing. Trainer G Clarke was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the gelding prior to racing again.

1ST ENIGMAN 2ND THE CAPTAIN 3RD EASTWOOD

 

Race 11: 0-66 2050m

Stewards interviewed trainer K Healy in relation to his riding instructions as his stable had multiple runners in this event.

ESCONDIDO (K Gladwin) – A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

WICKED RHYTHM (W Davis) – Bounded at the start.

Race 12: Great Northern Darwin Cup 2050m

Stewards interviewed trainer G Clarke in relation to his riding instructions as his stable had multiple runners in this event.

Stewards approved the scratching of MALAISE prior to 8.00am as the gelding was lame in the near fore due to an abscess.

HANDSOME RETURN (P Denton) cantankerous in the mounting yard kicking out in the preliminary and after striking the near hind leg underwent a veterinary examination and was subsequently withdrawn by the Stewards acting on veterinary advice at 5.29pm. Trainer G Clarke was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the gelding prior to racing again.

All monies wagered on HANDSOME RETURN was ordered to be refunded and the following deductions were applicable to all successful bets placed prior to 5.29pm.

This resulted in the race starting approximately 3 minutes late.

SAVATOXL (K Gladwin) – Fractious in the barriers prior to the start.

TURNBERRY (R Fradd) – Bumped at the start. Raced wide throughout.

ASH GREY (T Treichel) – Bounded at the start and bumped. Over raced through the early stages.

BUDGET KING (P Shiers) – The barrier gates were marginally slow to open and the gelding commenced awkwardly. Compounded prior to straightening. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have an elevated heart rate.

SAFETY DANCE (A Jordsjo) – Fractious in the barriers and reared as the start was effected losing considerable ground. Trainer D Leech was advised that the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.

General – Swab samples were taken from all winners and 2nd and 3rd in races 10 and 12. Pre race samples were taken from ANDALE GRINGO, KRONOS, LET’S CELEBRATE, EOKALIO, VON ROSEN, THE AUDITOR, BULL MARKET & all runners in race 10 and 12.
