General from DTC 28 July, 2021

TRNT Stewards have concluded an inquiry opened at the Darwin Turf Club race meeting on Wednesday 28 July, 2021 into the circumstances relating to multiple jockeys being dislodged from their mounts during the running of race 3 on the programme, the bet365 Class 2 Handicap (1100m).

Evidence was taken from jockeys Simon Miller, Sonja Wiseman, Wayne Davis, apprentice jockey Alice Lindsay and her host trainer Gary Clarke. The available patrol vison of the race was also reviewed.

It was established that leaving the 900m OUR SUSTAR (S Miller) commenced to race keenly and when being steadied became difficult to control, getting its head up and raced ungenerously into the first turn. Approaching the 700m the filly failed to negotiate the turn due to its racing manner and shifted ground outwards despite the efforts of jockey S Miller.

The filly shifted out into the racing line of SOMERVELL (W Davis), which also had been racing ungenerously in the back straight. SOMERVELL was restrained back and outwards and that gelding clipped the hind heels of AIR BLAZER (J Philpot) which in turn was checked by its rider and mistrode. As a consequence AIR BLAZER shifted ground outwards and made contact with the hindquarter of JOMERA (A Lindsay) which in turn was bumped outwards and clipped the near hind heel of POLICY (C Hunter).

This resulted in JOMERA stumbling and falling, dislodging A Lindsay near the 650m. SUPREME TIMES (S Wiseman) which was following mistrode when trying to avoid the fall and S Wiseman became unbalanced and was dislodged near the 620m. SOMERVELL which was following that runner, had to be checked when attempting to avoid the fall and W Davis became unbalanced and was dislodged near the 600m.

Stewards were satisfied on the evidence presented that the reason for JOMERA falling was the indirect result of OUR SUSTAR shifting ground outwards near the 700m placing pressure on runners to the outside. It was noted that OUR SUSTAR was racing for the first time in Darwin and on a sand track. Stewards were of the opinion that in the circumstances jockey S Miller had made every endeavour to ensure his mount negotiated the first turn safely, given the filly’s racing manner.

As no rider was determined to be at fault, the incident was deemed accidental.

He added that after obtaining the lead his mount travelled comfortably through the middle stages and on straightening but was under immediate pressure from the 250m and yielded ground.
