Abandonment of Darwin Turf Club race meeting Saturday 17th December, 2022
Approximately 2 hours prior to the scheduled start of race one on Saturday, heavy rain began to fall and quickly began to create surface water on the entire circumference of the race track and infield.
Stewards explored a number of different options with the Track and Facilities Manager in an attempt to address the track surface but it was decided that no remedial work could be carried out in such a short timeframe to enable the meeting to commence.
Following a number of inspections by Stewards, a final inspection was made by Stewards and senior riders at approximately 2:40 p.m.
All senior riders were unanimous in their decision that the track in its current state was unsafe for racing.
Consideration was also given as to the visibility of riders during a race and also the safety of horse and rider when the start was affected.
Subsequently the meeting was abandoned at 3:00pm and notification was disseminated to all relevant industry participants.
