Race 1: Happy Birthday Tina G Maiden Plate – 1300m
Stewards interviewed trainer C Pollard in relation to the riding instructions he intended to issue as the stable had multiple runners in the event.
MY MONARO (S Wiseman) – Cantankerous when leaving the saddling enclosure and struck the outside plastic fencing which caused the rider to dismount. Commenced to lay outwards racing into the first turn and hung outwards shifting ground from the 500m. Trainer M Nyhan through his representative was advised that the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.
BLUFFED (P Denton) – Raced wide from the 600m. Lay inwards under pressure in the straight.
HERE COMES BABBLER (D Gillett) – Stewards inquired into the circumstances relating to gelding passing away following the event. The veterinarian reported that the gelding had collapsed when being eased up after the event and following an examination she expressed the opinion that the gelding had died after suffering an aneurysm. Apprentice D Gillett advised that the gelding felt comfortable in its action in running and had raced competitively but following the event her mount felt uncoordinated in the hind leg action and she was able to safely dismount. Trainer C Pollard explained that he had no welfare or soundness concerns leading up to today’s race and the gelding had competed satisfactorily in a barrier trial on Tuesday 10 January, 2023. A post mortem swab sample was collected.

Race 3: Ladbrokes Summer Sprint Series 0-70 Handicap – 1200m
FIRST CRUSADE (C Hunter) – Crowded and steadied near the 950m.
CUDJERIE (D Gillett) – Bumped at the start. Over raced in the early and middle stages.
JET JACKSON (J Todd) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped.
VIRTUOUS MISS (S Wiseman) – Lay outwards through the middle stages.
General – Stewards inquired in the racing manners of CUDJERIE. Apprentice D Gillett advised that after jumping last from the barriers she rode the mare along vigorously for the first 100m in an endeavour to race forward. Her mount commenced to race fiercely and then refused to settle and she had difficulty in controlling the mare in the run to the first turn, shifting in near the 950m causing FIRST CRUSADE to be crowded and steadied by its rider. After securing a one off position in running VIRTUOUS MISS had to be taken outwards by its rider leaving the 950m in the interests of safety to allow additional galloping room for CUDJERIE as the mare continued to over race through the middle stages. After viewing the patrol films and listening to the evidence of senior riders and the Stewards, apprentice D Gillett acknowledged that in hindsight she had erred in pushing her mount along so vigorously in the early stages after missing the start, which caused the mare to race fiercely. Trainer C Pollard was advised that he must engage a senior rider for the mare in future race starts.

MYSTERY FLYER (E Lines) – Commenced awkwardly.
General – On inquiry jockey C Hunter (I’M A DREAMER) was found guilty of a charge of engaging in careless riding under AR131(a). The specifics being that whilst riding her mount along she permitted the gelding to shift ground outwards when not clear near the 100m causing FAMILJA to be carried outwards, tightened and restrained after making contact with ANKLE ROLEX. Jockey C Hunter had her license to ride in races suspended for a period of 2 NT meetings and in addition was fined the sum of $500.
