General: All runners engaged in the Pioneer Sprint and Alice Springs Cup were subject to veterinary checks on Friday 28 April, 2023. Runners in both races were required to be oncourse 2 hours prior to the relevant race start times for pre race testing.

All riders were breath tested for the presence of alcohol. Jockey J Lyon provided a breath sample that detected alcohol at a level greater in excess of the prescribed limit outlined under AR136(1)(f) and he was therefore stood down from his riding engagements on the day.

Stewards subsequently approved the following rider changes and scratching.

Race 3 ZOUTONS – A Nicholls

Race 5 SADLER’S SONG – S Fawke

Race 6 FESTIVAL OF LIGHT – scratched at the trainers request

Race 7 GLACIER’S GREY – S Fawke

Race 8 EARLY CROW – K Yuill

Race 9 I AM THE FOX – P Denton

Jockey J Lyon subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge under AR139(1)(a). In assessing the matter of an appropriate penalty, the Stewards considered:

  • The level detected
  • His previous record of breaches of this rule
  • His personal circumstances
  • He must repay TRNT the cost of return flights to attend the race meeting

J Lyon’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 12 weeks to expire after 23 July, 2023 and he was advised of his right of appeal.

STARDARI (S Fawke) – Commenced awkwardly bumping with another runner.

General: Apprentice I Luximon, the rider of the third placed (PAULO PACE) lodged an objection against the winner EUREKA’S VICTORY (D Gillett) alleging interference over the final 150m. After considering the Stewards patrol footage and rider’s evidence, the protest was dismissed. Subsequently, the Chairman of Stewards, acting under AR219(2), entered a protest on behalf of the connections of PAULO PACE against the second placegetter IRONEDGE (J Todd) alleging interference near the 150m. It was established that IRONEDGE had shifted ground outwards under pressure in the straight from the 200m and carried EUREKA’S VICTORY out resulting in PAULO PACE having to be steadied to avoid that runner’s heels near the 150m. The Stewards were of the opinion that the ground lost by PAULO PACE in this incident was greater than the neck margin between both runners at the finish, and therefore upheld the protest and amended the placings accordingly.

At a subsequent inquiry jockey J Todd was reprimanded for careless riding under AR131(a) for allowing his mount IRONEDGE to shift out uncorrected from the 200m and therefore causing this interference.

General: On inquiry jockey C Hunter (MANGIONE) was reprimanded for careless riding under AR131(a) for not making a greater effort to prevent her mount from shifting ground near the 650m, which in the opinion of the Stewards was the major contributing factor in MI MIJO (S Wiseman) being crowded for room and restrained.
