General – Steward inquired into apprentice I Luximon’s ride on BOOGIE NIGHTS, in particular his actions through the middle stages. Apprentice I Luximon advised that his instructions from the trainer were to go forward and lead if possible. When it became apparent in the back straight that he was no going to be able to cross the leader HETTINGER he continued to ride his mount vigorously as he had been specifically instructed not to ease up, as the gelding has shown a tendency to drop the bit in running. Trainer H Lehmann confirmed these instructions and was satisfied with the performance given the gelding finished fifth in the event. She explained that the gelding has been difficult to ride having won when able to lead at Bordertown on 5 March but then finished last in Darwin on 3 June when unable to maintain a forward position. In the circumstances the Stewards were of the opinion that apprentice I Luximon had erred in continuing to ride his mount so vigorously when positioned outside the leader from the 1200m until leaving the 800m when it was reasonable to attempt to settle outside HETTINGER in an endeavour to give his mount a better opportunity to finish the race off. He was admonished and advised to use his own initiative in similar circumstances.
Trainer H Lehman accepted these concerns and advised that she would consider a gear change for the gelding and confirmed at this stage it would race over the same distance next week.
