MR MARRAKECH (A Sweeney) – A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stewards interviewed jockey A Sweeney and trainer G Clarke in relation to the gelding’s performance and the rider’s handling in the home straight. On inquiry it was established that after being crossed in the early stages the gelding resented the kickback and raced extremely ungenerously, continually bounding in its action. The gelding continued to race in this manner through the middle stages with the rider having difficulty controlling his mount as he was positioned inside heels and could not shift outwards. When asked specifically about his riding in the home straight, jockey A Sweeney explained that after straightening he kept hold of his mount to remain balanced and ensure it was going to race tractably and when tested inside the 50m the gelding finished the race off well to finish fourth. After viewing the patrol films jockey A Sweeney acknowledged that in hindsight, he had the opportunity to ride his mount with more vigour from the 300m but also maintained his concerns relating to its ungenerous racing manner. Trainer Gary Clarke explained that at the gelding’s first start in Darwin on 25 April it had raced prominently in a three wide position and had not experienced any kick back and therefore raced without incident, finishing third. After consideration of the circumstances, trainer G Clarke was informed the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again. Jockey A Sweeney was reminded of his obligation to ensure that he rides in a manner to ensure that his mounts are given full opportunity at all stages to finish in the best possible position.
